Distinctive Appearance and Adaptability
The breed’s most striking feature is its triple-layered coat, composed of soft undercoat, coarse guard hairs, and curly wool-like fibers. While puppies are born with fluffy fur, their coat naturally forms dense, flat "flocks" by adulthood, providing insulation against freezing temperatures and shielding them from thorns and predators35. Temperament and Modern Role
As herding dogs, Bergamascos are renowned for independence, intelligence, and problem-solving skills, capable of making decisions without constant human guidance25. Historical Rescue and Revival
After World War II, declining agricultural needs nearly wiped out the breed. In the 1960s, geneticist Maria Andreoli spearheaded a conservation effort, rebuilding the population from a handful of survivors. By 2015, the American Kennel Club (AKC) recognized the Bergamasco, solidifying its global presence347.
Care and Health
While their coat appears high-maintenance, Bergamascos require minimal grooming. At one year old, their fur is "broken" into flocks—a one-time process—after which occasional debris removal and annual baths suffice34.
